THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
I had the opportunity to participate in the Danish TV show Danmarks Næste Klassiker, where I was challenged to reinterpret the classic Nordic storage bench and design a high-capacity, space-efficient bench for small homes.
FUNCTIONAL & SPACE-SAVING DESIGN
Crafted from molded plywood, the bench maximizes storage with a full-depth compartment, ideal for bulky items like winter clothing or sports gear. A custom wooden hinge allows the seat to open easily or be removed entirely for full access. Despite its strength, the bench is lightweight with integrated handles for easy movement.
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES OF MOLDED PLYWOOD
With no prior experience, I built the entire bench myself, learning to mold plywood through hands-on experimentation. The process was demanding, from crafting the mold to perfecting the bending technique. However, it allowed me to push the material’s potential, achieving a strong yet elegant form.
AFFORDABLE & CUSTOMIZABLE
Designed with affordability in mind, the bench minimizes material waste and production costs, making quality design more accessible. It also offers customization options—users can paint, oil, or upholster it to fit their style. Available in untreated, lacquered, or veneered variations, it adapts to different interiors.
SUSTAINABLE CRAFTSMANSHIP
Molded plywood is resource-efficient, using thin layers of wood while minimizing waste. The wooden wedge joinery eliminates the need for screws, glue, or metal fasteners, making the bench easy to assemble, disassemble, and recycle—extending its lifespan and reducing its environmental impact.
A CONTEMPORARY NORDIC CLASSIC
This project was an exploration of innovation and restraint—seeing how far I could push a single sheet of plywood. The result? A lightweight, durable, and entirely self-supporting storage bench—a modern, functional reinterpretation of a Nordic classic, built for real homes and real needs.
